The laughter has given way to political cheers as veteran Zambian comedian Thomas Sipalo, popularly known as Difikoti, completes an extraordinary transition from entertainment to public office after securing the Munali Constituency parliamentary seat on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket.

Sipalo’s reported victory in the 13 August 2026 General Election marks a significant milestone in a political journey that has taken him from the comedy stage to the centre of electoral competition in one of Lusaka’s closely watched constituencies.

For many Zambians, Difikoti is a familiar entertainment figure whose name became associated with locally rooted comedy, particularly through his long-running partnership with fellow comedian Levison Ngoma, popularly known as Bikiloni. But behind the humour was an individual who had increasingly demonstrated an interest in politics, public affairs and community development.

His move into elected politics therefore did not happen overnight.

From comedy icon to political aspirant

Thomas Sipalo built his public profile through comedy at a time when Zambia’s entertainment industry was developing a strong local identity. His performances with Bikiloni helped establish the pair as recognisable figures in Zambian comedy, with their humour drawing heavily on everyday experiences and local social realities.

A 2019 profile by Lusaka Star described Difikoti as a household name who, together with Bikiloni, had contributed significantly to the growth of Zambia’s comedy scene. The publication noted that his performances were rooted in jokes that resonated with ordinary Zambians.

His career also extended beyond live comedy. Difikoti appeared in television productions, corporate events, weddings and other entertainment engagements. His public profile consequently gave him a level of visibility that would later become an important part of his political identity.

Yet Sipalo’s ambitions were never confined entirely to entertainment.

His first serious attempt to enter Parliament came during Zambia’s 2021 General Election, when he contested the Munali parliamentary seat as an independent candidate.

The result demonstrated that his political appeal extended beyond his entertainment career.

According to official Electoral Commission of Zambia results, then-UPND candidate Mike Mposha won Munali with 35,752 votes, while Thomas Sipalo finished second with 30,585 votes. Patriotic Front candidate Patrick Samwimbila placed third with 29,214 votes.

The narrow gap between Mposha and Sipalo established the comedian as a serious political contender rather than merely an entertainer experimenting with politics.

A second attempt and a different political strategy

Sipalo’s 2026 campaign represented a different chapter from his 2021 bid.

In May 2026, he formally joined the UPND after previously positioning himself outside the governing party. Zambia’s national broadcaster, ZNBC, reported that Sipalo said his decision was influenced by what he viewed as continued development and the implementation of people-centred programmes under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.

He also pledged his support for Hichilema ahead of the 2026 General Election.

The move attracted considerable political attention because Sipalo had previously challenged the UPND in Munali as an independent candidate. His decision to join the party therefore transformed him from an outsider challenging the political establishment into a candidate seeking electoral power from within the governing party.

News Diggers reported that Sipalo said he and his Tiikosesa Movement had decided to join the UPND after what he described as a period of criticising from outside.

Lusaka Times similarly reported that Sipalo’s entry into the UPND was viewed as potentially significant because of his public profile and his claim that he was bringing supporters from the Tiikosesa Movement into the ruling party.

His adoption on the UPND ticket was subsequently reported in May, with Sipalo presenting the development as an opportunity to concentrate on the development of Munali.

In a statement reported by ZED Gossip, he described the moment as a time to work and reaffirmed that improving Munali remained his priority.

Thomas Sipalo, widely known by his stage name Difikoti, is a Zambian comedian and entertainer who rose to prominence through comedy alongside Bikiloni.

The two became recognised for their contribution to Zambia’s comedy culture, particularly through performances that drew upon ordinary social experiences and Zambian life.

A Lusaka Star profile published in 2019 described Sipalo as “Professor Difikoti” and highlighted his longstanding popularity among Zambian audiences. The publication reported that he had been a household entertainment figure for more than a decade.

His entertainment career also took him beyond Zambia. Difikoti and Bikiloni performed in Malawi on several occasions, demonstrating the regional reach of their comedy.

In 2016, Face of Malawi reported that the Zambian comedy duo were scheduled to perform in Malawi during the Easter holiday. The report identified Difikoti as Thomas Sipala and Bikiloni as Levison Nkhoma.

The duo also appeared at entertainment events in Malawi, including performances associated with the Easter Theatre Festival. The Times of Malawi reported in 2016 that Difikoti and Bikiloni had performed at an Easter event in Lilongwe and praised Malawi’s developing comedy and poetry scene.

That regional exposure helped establish Difikoti not only as a Zambian entertainer but also as a recognisable personality across parts of southern Africa.

A comedian who insisted politics was no joke

Long before his reported 2026 electoral victory, Sipalo was making clear that his political ambitions should not be dismissed simply because of his entertainment background.

In an interview published by The Zambian Observer in 2021, Sipalo explicitly distinguished his comedy career from his political aspirations. He said comedy was his talent and livelihood, while his interest in politics was connected to serving the people of Munali.

At the time, he argued that Munali faced developmental challenges and said he wanted to engage communities directly to understand their needs rather than impose solutions on them.

That position is important in understanding his political trajectory.

Rather than presenting his celebrity status as the central justification for seeking office, Sipalo attempted to frame his candidacy around community representation and development.

His 2021 performance at the ballot box subsequently provided evidence that his public popularity could translate into substantial electoral support.

Although he lost that contest, finishing second, the result gave him an important political foundation.

Munali is an important constituency in Lusaka, covering several densely populated and politically significant communities.

The constituency has historically attracted strong competition because of its urban character and sizeable electorate. Its political history also reflects Zambia’s broader electoral shifts, with different political parties controlling the seat at various points.

The 2021 contest demonstrated how competitive Munali could be. The official results showed only a relatively modest difference between Mposha and Sipalo, with the independent candidate receiving more than 30,000 votes.

That earlier result gave Sipalo a political base from which to launch another campaign.

His 2026 decision to contest on the UPND ticket was consequently significant not simply because a comedian was entering Parliament, but because an established political challenger was returning to the same constituency with a major political party behind him.

From independent challenger to ruling-party candidate

Sipalo’s political evolution has been marked by changing affiliations.

His 2021 campaign was conducted as an independent candidate. Subsequent reporting indicates that he became associated with other political groupings before eventually joining the UPND ahead of the 2026 election.

News Diggers reported that following his 2021 loss, Sipalo joined the United Kwacha Alliance and later briefly joined the Democratic Party before becoming associated with the Tonse Alliance led by former President Edgar Lungu.

His eventual move to the UPND therefore represented a substantial political realignment.

The development also generated criticism from political opponents. News Diggers reported comments from former PF national chairperson Emmanuel Mpankata Musonda, who questioned Sipalo’s motivations for joining the governing party.

Such criticism is part of the normal political contest surrounding candidates who change party affiliation, particularly when the move occurs close to an election.

Sipalo, however, defended his decision by pointing to what he considered the UPND government’s development record and direction.

Why Difikoti’s victory matters

The significance of Sipalo’s reported victory extends beyond the novelty of a comedian becoming a Member of Parliament.

Across Africa, entertainers and media personalities have increasingly entered electoral politics, leveraging established public profiles to build political movements and reach voters.

Sipalo’s journey illustrates how celebrity recognition can provide a platform for political mobilisation, but his story also demonstrates that celebrity alone does not guarantee electoral success.

His 2021 defeat showed that public popularity must be converted into an organised political campaign capable of attracting voters across different communities.

Five years later, his return to the same constituency with a major political party represents a markedly different electoral proposition.

For Munali residents, however, the central question will ultimately be whether the new lawmaker can translate campaign promises into measurable development outcomes.

Political office carries responsibilities that are considerably different from entertainment. Parliamentarians are expected to represent constituents, participate in legislative processes, scrutinise government policies and advocate for the interests of their constituencies.

Sipalo’s transition from comedian to legislator will therefore be judged less by his ability to command an audience and more by his performance in public office.

A new test beyond the comedy stage

The political journey of Thomas Sipalo offers an unusual but increasingly familiar story in African public life: a personality who first built influence through popular culture before seeking a formal mandate from voters.

Difikoti’s career demonstrates the political potential of cultural visibility, but his reported election victory also begins a new and more demanding chapter.

As a comedian, his responsibility was to entertain audiences.

As a politician, his responsibility is to represent them.

That distinction will become particularly important as he takes on parliamentary responsibilities and confronts the everyday development concerns of Munali residents.

His own earlier comments provide an indication of the standard by which his political career may be measured. In 2021, he said he wanted to understand communities and their challenges before determining how development should be pursued.

That philosophy now faces its most consequential test.

For a man whose public identity was built around making people laugh, the next stage of Thomas Sipalo’s career will be defined by whether he can make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people who have entrusted him with political representation.

Difikoti may have left the comedy stage for Parliament, but the spotlight has not disappeared.

And this time, the audience is not waiting for a joke.

It is waiting for results.
